Know Your Meme- "Royal Wedding Girl"

Know Your Meme

Royal Wedding Girl (or "Frowning Flower Girl" or "Royal Kiss Girl") is one of the nicknames for 3-year-old Grace Van Cutsem. She was seen pouting on the side as Prince William and Kate Middleton shared a kiss on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. She is the goddaughter of Prince William and was Kate Middleton's flower girl.

She was seen pouting off to the side as Prince William and Kate kissed on the balcony and she had her hands over her ears. The UK media says that she probably looked miserable because of all the commotion and applause around the palace.
Not long after being seen on tv, many people started tweeting things like "somebody on the balcony wasn't impressed with the royal kiss". The first Royal Wedding Girl tag was tweeted by Andrew Spearin, who photoshopped the girl into the bottom corner of Donald Trump giving a speech. Buzzfeed's Matt Stopera posted one of the first contest threads later on stating that people should use their image overlay tool to photoshop the little girl into other pictures to see where else they had seen her. Needless to say, within hours of the ceremony being over, there were many pictures of this little girl all over the internet.

Know Your Meme- "Facebook Cartoon Profile Picture Week"

Know Your Meme

In November 2010, Facebook users changed their profile pictures to a picture of their favorite cartoon. The first post about this event was in Greece and Cyprus, where on November 16th, people would change their profile pictures so that no humans would be on Facebook until November 20th.

Then the Cartoon Network created the event "Choose a Cartoon Character as Your Profile Picture for a Week" from Nov. 21st to Nov. 28th, 2010. Beginning on December 3rd though, the trend took on a new meaning as it became an effort of an anti-child abuse campaign, reported by ABC News, Gawker, and other social media outlets:
In support of anti-child violence, change your Facebook profile picture to a cartoon from your childhood. Until Monday Dec. 6, there should be no human faces on Facebook, but an invasion of memories. Join the fight against CHILD ABUSE. Invite your friends to do the same.

In response to this some people trolled (see blog about trolling) around and and posted images of Bart Simpson being choked or Pedobear.

Many Facebook users posted their favorite cartoon characters as their profile picture, including me and many of my friends, and it was an interesting week in December. I though it turned into a very cool event idea.

Know Your Meme-"Has anyone really been far as decided to use even go want to do look more like?"

Know Your Meme

“Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?” is a horrible use of the English language that was first posted in 2009 as a reply on 4chan's discussion thread about the Wii game The Conduit. It spread rapidly throughout the rest of 4chan and onto other social websites like YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.
Eventually someone was able to come up with a witty reply: “You’ve got to be kidding me. I’ve been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that he has really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like. It’s just common sense.”

The real conversation looked like this:

Original:

“Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Rephrased:

“Has anyone really decided as to even go that far in wanting to do to look more like so?”

It was then deciphered:
“Has any video game company really taken such measure to make a game so realistic?"

I think this was a very creative response to the video game and gained a lot of laughs from anyone who read it, as no one knew exactly what they meant. I heard about this meme from a friend who randomly asked me that question. Needless to say I was very confused. Until now.

Know Your Meme- "Trolling"

Know Your Meme

A troll is someone who will state something with the intention of stirring up controversy. Usually the statement is really obvious or absurd, and only absurd people will get offended and upset about it. For example, one might purposefuly spel things wrong or use poor grammar, knowing that this will drive some peoplecrazy, eliciting a response (from Know Your Meme). If you respond to a troll, you are said to be feeding the troll, so keep your coolface on.
Successful trolling brings pleasure at the expense of others. There is controversy though in identifying people who are sincerely crazy or idiotic on purpose and those who are trolling.

Trollface/Coolface is a meme with a comic depicting ‘what trolls want you to believe’ vs. ‘what is actually happening’.

Websites

One website that I really like is the Exhibition Monet 2010. I thought this website was very pleasing to the eye (the reason why it is nominated for a Webby). I love the homepage because it is so organized and easy to navigate. I also really enjoy the transitional effects and motion graphics used to move from page to page. It is extremely easy to navigate through the gallery of paintings, the captions sit nicely below, and the background does not detract the viewer from the painting, yet is artistic in its own way. They have hyperlinks set up so that you can share the information on facebook or twitter and they are easy to find. There is music playing in the background, but you can always shut that off. The journey portion of the site is interactive so that you can go through Monet's journey yourself. Overall, this site was very innovative and creative.

One website that was really bad was the Yale University School of Art. The first problem was the picture in the background. Who is that?! And why can't we see their face? There is text with a background in front of her face. The colors of the text backgrounds don't match and shouldn't be part of the color palette. The navigation is really easy, but it leads to worse looking pages unfortunately, especially the everything else page. The background is completely distracting. The Visiting page has a motion graphic background and switches from one set of country flags to another. I had difficulty reading the text because the background blended with the text background. Everything about this website is wrong and so distracting that you don't even want to try looking through the galleries and reading about what one of the best universities in the U.S. has to offer in art.

Know Your Meme- "Rebecca Black- Friday"

Know Your Meme

Rebecca Black is an amateur YouTube musician who is known for her music video “Friday.” The song gained online notoriety in March 2011 for its monotonous lyrics accompanied by heavy use of auto-tune. The music video was first uploaded in February 2011. CNN Marquee's blog announced that her video was produced by Ark Music Factory, a California-based company that produced similar teen music videos, such as Kaya's "Can't Get You Out of my Mind" and Alana Lee's "Butterflies". All of these videos have young girls whose voices are auto-tuned, but somehow become really popular, either because some people actually like them or because people are laughing at them.
The music video gained popularity during the second weekend in March, when the popular blog The Daily What posted the video on March 11th, 2011. It was then reblogged and shared on Tumblr, Twitter and various discussion forums. By March 15th, the video had reached over 3 million views and by March 17th, it reached 10 million views and the single reached the Top 100 on iTunes. On March 30th, 2011, Rebecca Black’s “Friday” YouTube video officially surpassed Justin Bieber’s “Baby” in total number of user downvotes with over 1.1 million downvotes.
They are supposedly talking about a summer tour for Rebecca Black, even though most of the views are people making fun of her voice and the horrible video that was made. During her interview with the internet news blog, The Daily Beast, Black said she was surprised by all of the horrible comments on her video, but she refused to take the video off of Youtube. She said, “I decided not to give the haters the satisfaction that they got me so bad I gave up.” She also had interviews on ABC's Good Morning America and Jay Leno.

"It's over 9000!"

Know Your Meme

I have a few friends who watch Dragon Ball Z and play the game all the time. So when I saw this meme, I thought it would be cool to post it, as it reminds me of them saying it.

Dragon Ball is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama. After Dragon Ball, Toei Animation released a second anime television series, Dragon Ball Z . Picking up where the first left off, Dragon Ball Z is adapted from the final twenty-six volumes of the manga series. It premiered in Japan in 1989 and ran until January 31, 1996.
In the original Japanese dub of the series, and in both the Japanese and English language mangas, Vegeta states that Goku’s level is actually “over 8000.” On October 17th, 2006, 4Channer and Youtube user Kajetokun uploaded the video “9000!! NINE THOUSAAAAANDD!” The video had over five million views.
The phrase is now used to talk about large amounts of something, and is in place of the word "tons" or "like a million".  It was a huge hit with Dragon Ball Z fans and spread very quickly and also inspired many remixes.

Over 9000 was a big hit with 4Chan early on, but in September of 2008, one anonymous troll left a message on Oprah Winfrey’s message board, claiming to represent an organized network of pedophiles. Oprah took the bait, and read the post to her audience, and ended up showing the video.
Considering the power and influence that Oprah has, this was viewed by many Anon’s as an “Epic Win.” Oprah had fallen for it, and was very disturbed. Many “Oprah 9000” remix videos followed.

"Inception Cat"- Know Your Meme

Know Your Meme

"Inception Cat" is a youtube video of a cat slowly raising its head above the floorboard and giving a peak before hiding again. The Inception soundtrack is playing in the background while this is going on. The Youtube clip was originally submitted by user spederson7 on September the 2nd 2010. There were 2,300,000 views in the first month of uploading.

Original video

While this video had a huge viral impact, this was not the first video with a cat and using the Inception theme that was posted on July 19, 2010. The first was called "Catception".

Catception

There are many other videos similar to "Inception Cat" on YouTube.

Know Your Meme- "Dog Fort"

Know Your Meme

Dog Fort is a multi-paneled comic about a recon team of dog lobsters routinely checking in with a communications officer named Dog Fort. It started as just a single panel comic but was expanded later.
In May 2010, Know Your Meme user Von Smallhousen found a Dog Fort entry (at the time only a single panel image) and created a comic using the Dog Fort and Red Lobster entries (they were created separately, Dog Fort for a contest on Cracked in June 2009, and Red Lobster was a photo taken of a corgi dressed as a lobster for Halloween in 2008). On November 5th, 2010, Dog Fort became a meme and became extremely popular. Dog Fort's blog and website is: www.ThisIsDogFort.org
I thought the comic was very entertaining.

Google Maps Art Project

http://www.googleartproject.com/

I was very impressed with the Google Art Project. I really enjoyed being able to walk through some of the galleries of the biggest art museums in the world without actually having to be there. I loved being able to not only view some of the works of the art, but also viewing the actual rooms and how the galleries are set up. The architecture of these museums are very intriguing. I liked being able to navigate on my own through the rooms or being able to just switch through the paintings if I wanted to. I especially loved finding famous paintings that I have heard about in other classes or that are really famous, like The Starry Night, by Vincent Van Gogh which is located in the MoMA in New York City.

Some paintings I also enjoyed were:
Guitar and Newspaper by Juan Gris

Know Your Meme- "Challenge Accepted"

Know Your Meme

“Challenge Accepted” is a series of four-pane comics depicting real life situations where the character has to face   a highly difficult or dangerous task and chooses to embrace the near-impossible challenge against all odds. It is thought to be originated on Bungie's Flood Forums in a thread titled "When your teacher tells you" in November 2010. Before the meme was started, the statement "Challenge Accepted" was used on the TV sitcom "How I Met Your Mother" as Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) often takes on almost impossible challenges that his friends bring up as jokes.
The joke is now on Tumblr and Funny Junk as well. It has become exceedingly popular in December and January on Google.
